Stuc a’ Chroin 5000 Hill Race Maps
The race starts and finishes towards the north of the village of Strathyre close to the A84 by the tennis courts (grid ref. 562172) The route follows a path uphill behind the start area & joins the forest road after about 500 yards in a East South East direction. After a couple of hundred metres south on a forestry track, then following another established path ESE for another short hop. Onto a reclaimed peat road for about 3k to the edge of the forest is reached (grid ref 574158). Turn right in a South direction – rough ground – no path – follow edge of forest to (grid ref 577149) and heading North East to cross Meal Mor (550m) to point (grid ref 585160) overlooking Glen Ample.
Down the hill to cross the hill-walkers’ path through Glen Ample (350m) grid ref 591160).Cross path and up steep heather slope to the top of Beinn Each (grid ref 603158). From Ben Each the route follows a hill walkers path along the ridge to Bealach nan Caber (grid ref 603165) then follows the same path to Stuc ‘a Chroin (grid ref 617175) via Bealach Glas (grid ref 606171).
Return: As ascent to Bealach nan Cabar then down long grass slopes to cross Glen Ample path (grid ref 591158) then follow outward route to return to Strathyre.
Note for runners: The race route is well flagged and must be followed. There are marshals positioned at all changes of direction.
A .gpx file of the route can be downloaded here ('save as' a .gpx file when prompted even though it's an .xls file, or rename it as a .gpx file after downloading). This can be used to mark the route in GPS devices, Google Earth, OS Getamap, Runkeeper and Walk Highlands web sites. Note that these are not 100% accurate and therefore runners should take care to follow the marked route on the hill.
