The Ben Sheann Hill Race

Wednesday 15th June 2011

Ben Sheann, Ben Shian, Beinh an t-Sidhein, however you spell it, there's a race up it on Wednesday 15th June. Gaelic for 'Mountain of the Fairies', you still have to be tough to run it - this is the stocky little brother of the Stuc a'Chroin 5000

Described by Scottish Hill Racing as "A micro classic. A small race with a big feel", this year's race will follow the same route as last year. The route is as follows -

Leave from No 2 Keip Road, turn up above "Mary's garage" and go up old landrover track to 1st forestry road. Turn left along road approx 60m, turn right up in forest ride. Traverse up hill and exit forest south of timber operations and follow route on map to summit. Loop round hill top and pick up same route to return to bottom. The race is to be held on Wednesday the 15th of June, 2011 at 7:30pm, registration will be on the day at The Inn from 6:00pm. The race start is a short distance from the registration point so registration will close at 7:15pm to ensure everyone is at the start in plenty of time.

Here's what happened last year ...

Wednesday 16th June 2010 Ben Sheann Hill Race

Good weather for the 22nd Ben Sheann Hill Race encouraged a turnout of 68 runners, all of whom completed the course, some just to get away from the midges! It was an excellent race, just 33 seconds separating the first 2. 24 clubs were represented, along with 9 unaffiliated runners and 7 locals.

The course was changed to accommodate the Forestry works in the area but most runners appreciated the new course and some preferred it to the old one.

Adam Gatens (Westerlands) finished first, posting a time of 0:27:48 closely followed by Steven Fallon (Carnethy) 00:28:21, and in 3rd place Alan Smith, (Deeside) 00:29:00. First for the Females were Catriona Buchanan (Ochil) 00:31:57, 2nd was Emma O'Shea (Deeside) 00:32:01, and 3rd was Judith Turner (Carnegie) 00:35:47.

The full breakdown can be found here but here's a summary :

Steven Fallon - Male Vet 40+

Fiona Dunlop - Female Vet 40+

Alan Smith - Male Vet 50+

Adam Gatens - Male Junior

Eddie Dealtry - Male Vet 60+

Richard Coombs - Local Prize

Thanks to everyone who helped create the alternate course, those who helped marshall the course tonight, (despite the midgies), and of course to Tony and all the staff at the Munro.
